Abstract

At the Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications at Harvard University, we have launched a new lecture series called “Literature on Mathematical Sciences.” The purpose of these lectures is to introduce key developments in various branches of modern mathematics to students and scholars so that they can gain a global view of the subject and hopefully acquire enough knowledge to be able to cooperate with scientists working in different though related fields. I am delivering the first of these lectures, which fittingly concerns Shiing-Shen Chern, my former advisor, someone who was an important mentor to me and to many other mathematicians over many generations, as well as a leading figure in the field of geometry.
